Lactulose

Indications/Uses

Chronic constipation. Portal-systemic encephalopathy.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Chronic constipation Starting dose for 1st 3 days: Adult 15-45 mL. Childn 5-14 yr 15 mL; 1-5 yr 5-10 mL. Infant <1 yr 5 mL. Maintenance daily dose: Adult 10-25 mL. Childn 5-14 yr 10 mL; 1-5 yr 5-10 mL. Infant <1 yr 5 mL. Portal-systemic encephalopathy Initially 30-50 mL 3 times daily, then adjusted accordingly to prevent occurrence of diarrhea.

Special Precautions

Diabetes, galactosemia.

Adverse Reactions

Prolonged use: Abdominal & gastric discomfort, diarrhea, stomach cramps, thirst.
